Abstract

The main objective of this work is to investigate the journalistic coverage of hate speech (HS) in Spain during the general election campaigns of the first two decades of the 21st century. The field of HS and media has been focused on social networks in recent years, despite the importance that can still be attributed to traditional media in shaping the public sphere. This study aims to contribute to covering this gap. A sample of 451 pieces on HS published during the seven campaigns carried out between 2004 and 2019 has been extracted through the MyNews database and has subsequently been analyzed. The results reveal that most of the texts include accusations of hate speech, that the topics to which HS refers to are above all cultural (versus redistributive) and that, among political parties, the main recipients of accusations of HS are the extreme ones, while the main issuers are those on the right.
