A Review on Discourse Studies Concerning Migrants in Media Publications from Brazil and South Africa: Towards more Afro-Latin Perspectives:

Abstract

This paper reviews scientific literature about representation on migrants in Global South media and in other parts of the world, focusing on comparative studies in Brazil and South Africa, and providing suggestions for less Eurocentric perspectives relating to such topic. We resort to a critical review on theoretical references and multiple studies published between the second half of the last century and the beginning of this century. South African comparative research through meta-studies and their quantitative tendency —alongside French Discourse Analysis, Bakhtinian Circle and Greimas’ influence in Brazil— indicate how this type of research needs to be expanded in the Global South. This paper recommends the construction of more systematic content-based analyses and the exploration of the different degrees and forms through which balanced or patronizing portrayals on migrants are projected in media. Dislocation from a dominant sociocognitive perspective towards inter-semiotic/sociolinguistic approaches is advisable. This work also suggests that Pan-Africanism, African approaches, and/or Latin-American philosophies should be part of this foundation for migration criticism, especially if these migratory processes are analyzed in media or communication contexts.

Gilberto Alves Araújo, Universidade Federal do Pará & University of the Witwatersrand

Gilberto Alves Araújo is an Assistant Professor and Researcher at the Universidade Federal do Pará, where he has been working on projects relating to discourse analysis, Latin American/Brazilian cultural studies, language teaching and media. He is also a doctoral researcher at University of the Witwatersrand. His investigation at this institution has been relating to discursive representations on black migrants in Brazilian and South African media. Among his last publications concerning the abovementioned topics, one can mention: “The Hour of the Star through media lenses: a tribute to Clarice Lispector” (2021); “Black migrants in Brazilian and South African tabloids: Representations on the Global South” (2020); “Por uma literatura infantil e juvenil mais afrocêntrica” (2020) and “Teachers’ discourse on English language teaching: faces of resistance and neo-colonialism” (2019), among many others.

Gizélia Maria da Silva Freitas, Universidade Federal do Pará

Gizélia Maria da Silva Freitas is an Assistant Professor and Researcher at the Universidade Federal do Pará, where she has been working on Applied Linguistics related issues, as can be seen in many of her publications, such as “The affective filter hypothesis and the motivation construct within second language acquisition: a critical review” (2019). In this sense, Prof. Da Silva Freitas has accumulated a considerable experience with research on English language teaching methods and theories, as well as on communicative approaches to language teaching. Furthermore, alongside Prof. Alves Araújo (see above), Prof. Freitas has been a member of several social and academic organizations through which she carries out black intellectual-political activism and reflects on Afro-Brazilian womanism causes.
