Abstract

The relationship between fashion and photography has always been very close and productive. Since fashion is a commercial product, it has to be presented to the public, it must be spread and sold. In this sense, fashion photography is very effective because it establishes an immediate communication with the viewer. However, fashion photographers do not just create beautiful images to sell them. Through their stories, photographers suggest and make people dream, they propose in order to make others feel. When creating a certain atmosphere, fashion photography relates to and is inspired by other arts, such as, painting, architecture, theater or cinema. This is case of the photographer that concerns us, Deborah Turbeville. Based on this context this paper will examine and analyze Deborah Turbeville's fashion photography. Throughout her career, the aforementioned photographer has been able to create her own vision through a staging full of poetry and mystery. The main objective will be to try to establish the personal conception of fashion photography in Deborah Turbeville's work, and also to detect which are the elements that underlie in her images, as well as the idea of elegance and everlasting beauty. Also, analogies between Deborah Turbeville´s images and the pictorial photography will be established. The methodology will be based on the location and collection of documentary sources. Within primary sources, we will study the works published so far with Deborah Turbeville's pictures, especially the last publication (Deborah Turbeville: The Fashion Pictures, Rizzoli, 2011).
