Abstract

This is the text which was the keynote speech at the presentation of the UNESCO Chair in Communication Research in Africa, on March 20, 2012. Professor Yao exposes the complex interrelationship between democracy and communication in Africa. Starting from the basic recognition of the importance of freedom of speech and press, as a requirement for the development of societies, the limitations are many. Freedom of the press is, de facto, an indicator of the evolution of African societies. The article takes a historical journey to analyze the major milestones and challenges of communication in Africa.
